New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
